S.Korea, China not to expand container shipping

South Korea and China have agreed not to increase next year the number of container vessels navigating between the two countries considering a slowdown in the shipping industry. South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs and its Chinese counterpart on Thursday reached the agreement in their 16th maritime talks. The two sides also decided to put off until next year discussions on opening a new sea route for car ferries.
In addition, China agreed to address the issue of Chinese ports charging customs clearance and quarantine fees on empty containers owned by Korean companies. The Seoul government also expressed its intent to consult related agencies to permit customs clearance for Chinese vessels entering Pyeongtaek and Incheon ports on weekends and Korean holidays.
