Ukraine and Russia to coordinate standards of shipping in Kerch Strait

Ukrainian and Russian transport specialists have touched upon the issues of shipping in the Kerch Strait, press service of Ukraine’s Ministry of Transport and Communications reports. During the talks it was stressed on the necessity to create a regional system of safety of shipping in the water basin of the KerchStrait. The Ukrainian and Russian party achieved understanding in terms of activation of the process of coordination of normative documents, which are to create conditions for elaborating of a mechanism of control over keeping the norms of international conventions in the area of shipping security and protection of environment by the two states.

Minister of Transport and Communications of Ukraine Yosyp Vinsky stressed that with regards to shipping issue in the Kerch Strait a series of regulations exists which are unlikely to be solved owing to politically unsettled issues of borders between the countries.

By now shipping in the Kerch Strait is conducted according to the temporary ordinance signed by Ukraine and Russia on November 14, 2007.

“In fact we are working under the conditions when there exist no clear rules of shipping in the KerchStrait. There are only temporary ones,” Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Ihor Levitin stressed during a press conference.
