Taiwan's Wan Hai posts earnings for Q3

Thanks to stabilized freightage on the Asian near-shore shipping routes, Wan Hai Lines Ltd., one of Taiwan's top-three container-shippers, posted NT$0.78 (US$0.02 at US$1:NT$33) in after-tax earnings per share in the first three quarters of this year, followed by Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. and Evergreen International Ltd. Both Yang Ming and Evergreen were buffeted by the global economic recession and the unexpected, unsuccessful imposition of freightage on European and American routes in peak season.
Evergreen posted NT$290 million (US$8.78 million) in earnings in the third quarter of this year, down 6%% year-on-year. The company registered NT$1.487 billion (US$44.78 million) in after-tax earnings, or NT$0.49 (US$0.014) in EPS, in the first three quarters of this year, down a whopping 78.26% year-on-year. The company attributed the earnings decline to the poor operating climate, including the fall in average container-shipping fees and container volume handled.
Yang Ming posted NT$306 million (US$9.27 million) in after-tax earnings in the third quarter of this year, down 60% from a year earlier. The company posted NT$1.599 billion (US$48.45 million) in cumulative earnings, or NT$0.62 (US$0.018) in EPS, in the first three quarters of this year, down 53.39% year-on-year.
Excluding the losses of NT$600 million (US$18.18 million) in foreign exchange, interest rates and fuel-based financial commodities, the company scored NT$679 million (US$20.57 million) in quarterly earnings in the third quarter of this year, down 3.6% from a year earlier.
