New cargo port Vuosaari is officially opened in Helsinki (Finland)

Official ceremony dedicated to opening of Vuosaari Harbour has been held today, PortNews IAA learnt from the port’s press center. All operations on transfer of cargo infrastructure from the North and West Harbours of Helsinki port to Vuosaari have been completed by today. The first vessel called on the port one week before the official opening – on November 24. Cargo and passenger services are distinguished now: the port of Helsinki handles passenger vessels while Vuosaari Harbour carries out cargo operations. Former cargo territory of Helsinki port will be used for residential and office buildings.

The new harbour complex will be capable of handling 10 million tonnes of cargo per year with ro-ro cargo accounting for 60% and containers – for 40%. The Harbour center occupies the territory of 250 hectares including 90 hectares of reclaimed land. According to Kari Noroviita, Director of Vuosaari Harbour Centre, there is a possibility to increase the port’s design capacity by two or even three times.
