Australian port facility set for expansion
Australia's Anketell Point port facility has received the go-ahead from Western Australia Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for the development of a deepwater port, Seatrade Asia online reports.
The 20-year port development plan includes the establishment and operation of a deepwater port with iron ore stockpiling, transfer and shiploading facilities. The port would have an initial capacity of 115m tonnes a year, increasing to around 350m tonnes once the project is completed.
Australia-listed Aquila Resources, which owns 50% of the port project, said the first stage of the West Pilbara iron ore project would use around 30m tonnes of the port's export capacity, with the company envisioning that subsequent stages of the project would require additional port capacity.
