RS to class 22600 Project diesel icebreaker
Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) and Baltic Plant- Shipbuilding on July 21, 2012 signed a contract on the classification of the 25MW diesel-powered icebreaker of project 22600 to be constructed at the BPS’ yards, the classification society said.
The vessel will be built to the RS class: KM (*) Icebreaker 8 [2] AUT1-ICS OMBO FF2WS DYNPOS-2EPP ANTI-ICE HELIDECK-H WINTARIZATION (-40) ECO-S Special purpose ship.
The icebreaker has been designed in accordance with the latest requirements for vessels of this class, and will be equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment. The vessel is designed to escort merchant ships, to operate as an auxiliary icebreaker to a fleet of icebreakers assisting shipping along the Northern Sea Route, to operate in shallow areas of the Arctic and in the mouths of rivers, assisting offloading of cargoes onto fast ice, for towing vessels and other floating vessels in ice and clean water, rendering assistance to vessels and participation in rescue operations in ice and open water, to help research ships, to participate in extinguishing fires on ships and oil drilling platforms.
Icebreaker’s main characteristics: length - 142 m, beam - 29 m, depth - 16.2 m, maximum depth - 9.5 m, full load displacement – 22,130 tons, gross tonnage – 20,450 tons, 4 main engines rate power - 8700 kW each, the crew - 38 people, experts team - 90 people.
The keel-laying ceremony for the lead ship was slated for September 2012. The Customer is the Federal Agency of Sea and River Transportation, developer - Rosmorport. The first ship is scheduled for delivery in 2015.

St. Petersburg-based Baltic Shipyard is one of the largest shipbuilding enterprises in Russia. The shipyard specializes in the construction of diesel and nuclear-powered icebreakers, ice-class vessels, heavy lift vessels and warships. Baltic Plant-Shipbuilding Ltd. is a legal entity formed in December 2011 to take over newbuilds orderbook and workforce from Baltic Shipyard, which was at the time facing insolvency.
