Throughput of port Riga (Latvia) up 13.2% to 3.235 mln t in Jan'14
In January 2014, the port of Riga (Latvia) handled 3,235,100 t of cargo (+13.2%, year-on-year). As IAA PortNews was told by the port authority, coal transshipment declined by 8.2% to 1.102 mln t, transshipment of oil products surged by 57% to 989,900, timber turnover fell by 3.1% to 148,000 t, wood pellets – dropped by 45.1% to 54,600 t, metal scrap – up 39.3% to 50,700 t. Transshipment of ore hit 32,400 t.
The port’s container throughput was 7.5% down to 28,472 TEUs. Passenger throughput increased by 5.1% to 53,351 persons including 3,042 cruise passengers (-39.8%).
Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2013, the port’s throughput declined by 1.6%, year-on-year, to 35,466,700 t of cargo.
