Three-month cargo volume of Murmansk port operator rises 3.4% to 4.23 million tonnes

Cargo shipments through the terminals of JSC Murmansk Commercial Seaport (MMTP) in January-March 2014 increased 3.4% compared with the same three-month period a year earlier, to 4,227,000 tonnes, the port operator said in a press release.

In March 2014, the stevedore company 1,427,000 tonnes of different cargoes, a 3.4% gain from March 2013. The volume includes 1,171,000 tonnes of coal (+18, 5% vs March 2013). The volume of bulk cargo rose by 8.7% (110,400 tonnes) thanks to increased shipments of coal and manganese ore. The share of general cargo dropped.

In the reporting period the MMTP handled 35 vessels, including 16 coal-laden bulk carriers, and 22,500 rail cars (including 17,400 coal-laden rail cars ). The March performance showed that the average daily rate of discharging coal at the port hit a record volume ever, 565 cars / day.

In March, JSC Agrosfera handled 133,900 tonnes of fertilizers and LLC Murmansk Bulk Terminal - 138,370 tonnes of bulk cargo. Total cargo throughput of the three stevedoring companies of Murmansk Commercial Sea Port reached 1,699,500 tonnes.

OJSC Murmansk Commercial Seaport was founded in 1994. MCS operates 17 berths of total length of about 3 km. The water depths allow the port to accommodate vessels with draft of 15.5 m and length of more than 265 m. The port operator specializes in handling ranged cargoes, including non-ferrous metals and alloys in packages, rolled ferrous metals, coal, apatite concentrate, alumina, and scrap and iron ore pellets in bulk, chemical products in bags and big-bags, construction cargo and foodstuff. In 2013, cargo throughput at MMTP's terminals totaled 17,013,000 tonnes.
