In January-March 2014, the port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 1,416,700 t of cargo (+4.8%, year-on-year). As IAA PortNews learnt from the port authority, transshipment of grain increased 1.9 times to 807,200 t, timber – fell by 29.2% to 98,700 t, construction materials – climbed by 15.9% to 91,300 t, oil products – climbed by 17.3% to 57,700 t, crude oil – surged 2.2 times to 49,800 t.
The port’s container throughput fell by 9% to 926,000 TEUs. Transshipment of ro-ro cargo cargo declined by 4% to 7,246 units. Passenger turnover fell by 15% to 8,580 persons. The number of calls declined by 1% to 356 calls.
The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries, mainly Belarus. In 2013, the port of Liepaja handled 4.84 mln tonnes of cargo.
