On April 10, 2014, Yaroslavsky Shipbuilding Plant OJSC launched the second serial landing craft of project 21820 (building No 702) built under the state contract with the RF Ministry of Defence, the shipyard’s press center says.
Landing crafts of the project 21820 are intended for high-speed transfer by sea and landing on an unequipped coast of human contingents, wheeled and tracked vehicles. High speed of the boat is ensured by the presence of the air cavity on the bottom, powerful diesel engines М507А-2D and ventilated water jet propellers.
Project 21820 was developed by the Nizhni Novgorod based design bureau named after R. E. Alekseev. Technical support of construction of the boats of the project 21820 was entrusted by the customer to the OJSC«Yaroslavlsky Shipyard», as the plant-builder.
In the course of the works on the project the professional staff of the enterprise for the purposes of improvement proactively implemented a significant number of measures aimed at enhancement of reliability and safety of the technical equipment, habitability improvement and replacing of discontinued products with modern analogues. The shipbuilders of Yaroslavl implemented a number of proposals of the government Commission on improvement of combat and operational qualities of the lead boat with the yard building number 701.
The results of this work were taken into account when building the landing craft No 702. All the decisions were taken in close coordination and cooperation with the Navy Scientific Research Institute of shipbuilding and armament in accordance with the decisions of the customer.
In view of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War of 1812 and to eternize the memory of the heroes in the names of a series of landing crafts, the Order No.1 of the Head of the Navy dd. 12 January 2012 provided the name of Lieutenant Rimsky-Korsakov to the landing craft No 702.
The other two boats of the project 21820 built by the OJSC «Yaroslavsky Shipyard» were named the Denis Davydov and the Michman Lermontov in the honor of the officers of the guard marine crew who distinguished themselves in combat actions during the Patriotic war of 1812.
