Two routes recommended for transport passage across Kerch Strait (map)
Two routes have been recommended for further consideration by the expert council in charge of engineer survey and feasibility study of the project on development of the transport passage across the Kerch Strait, State Company Russian Highways (Avtodor) says in its press release.
The expert council held its meeting on May 15, 2014, in Kerch.
Taking into account the narrowest parts of the strait and the coast features at the approaches, the following alternatives were considered: Northern, Zhukovsky, Yenikalsky and Tuzlinsky.
“All the alternatives were estimated with consideration of the following factors: length of the passage, existence of railways and highways at the approaches from both sides, possible rise in price with the construction of additional transport facilities at the approaches,” the statement says.
Having considered the above and other factors, the council found the Zhukovsky and Tuzlinsky routes as the most preferable ones.
The Zhukovsky route implies the use of Chushka split with the cross-section in the area of the existing ferry link.
The Tuzlinsky route is the southernmost one based on the Tuzlinsky split and an earthfill embankment.
For the purpose of the project implementation, State Company Avtodor has established a subsidiary OJSC Transport Passage across the Kerch Strait. As of today, engineer survey and feasibility study of the project is being carried out by OJSC Giprotransmost. Field survey is to be completed by June 1.
