Blohm+Voss: European shipbuilding cannot compete with Asian shipyards in low-tech segment

European shipbuilding cannot compete with Asian shipyards in construction of large capacity vessels in low-tech segment, IAA PortNews reporter cites representative of Blohm+Voss, one of the largest shipyards in Germany, as telling journalists in Hamburg.

According to him, European shipbuilders are competent and competitive in construction of hi-tech and sophisticated vessels.

Mr. Tor E. Svensen, CEO DNV GL Maritime, says that Europe is presently an innovative center of the global shipbuilding with some 70% of vessel equipment supplied by European companies. There are several shipbuilding clusters in Europe: Norway, Netherlands, Greece and Germany.

Yet, some 90% of the tonnage is produced in Asia.
