Seaworthiness of Transport Ships – a book by RS expert

A book ‘Seaworthiness of Transport Ships’ by Doctor of Science Mikhail Kuteynikov - Head of the RS Hull Department was published in May 2014 in St. Petersburg, RS says in its press release.

The book covers issues of seaworthiness and strength standards of sea-going ships, provides an analysis and systematisation of the leading classification societies requirements for setting ships operational restrictions. It also provides a methodology to assign the criteria admissible values, test calculations results, model and field tests results, methods of drawing complex charts, a constellation of which is a framework to guide a navigator through the safe modes of ship's operation.

According to M. Kuteynikov: "Work on the book made it possible to summarise the results of a many years research on seaworthiness properties of cargo ships, and to create a kind of synthesis of theoretical and practical aspects of the subject. Key elements of the published work were proved and verified, including field tests on Russian ships”.

The book is aimed at a wide professional audience involved in the issues of seaworthiness and strength of ships during their design and service. It will be useful for designers, experts in technical operation of fleet, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students in related disciplines, as it will allow getting a better understanding of operational issues and evaluation practice of seaworthiness properties.

Mikhail A. Kuteynikov was employed by the USSR Register in 1989. In the Ships’ Theory Group he dealt with the issues of ensuring seaworthiness of cargo ships.

Dr. Kuteynikov actively participates in the work of the RS Scientific and Technical Council (STC). He was a member of the Working Group on Stability, Subdivision and Load Lines of the International Association of Classification Societies. As a member of the Russian Federation delegation, he participated in the work of the Sub-Committee on Stability and Load Lines and on Fishing Vessels’ Safety (SLF), the UN International Maritime Organisation. Currently, he is involved in the activities of the IMO Sub-Committee on Ships’ Design and Construction. Dr. Kuteynikov is an author of over 50 scientific publications.
