First tanker for Yamal-LNG project to be delivered in 2016, NOVATEK CEO says

First gas carrier for Yamal-LNG project will be delivered in 2016, Leonid Mikhelson, Chairman of NOVATEK BoD (project shareholder), said at Saint-Petersburg International Forum. According to him, the tanker with reinforced ice class will be capable of independent navigation along the Northern Sea Route.

“Safe transportation of hydrocarbons in northern water has been practically confirmed,” Leonid Mikhelson said.

He also noted that Arctic transportation is more expensive as compared with transportation in southern seas but it is compensated with low LNG production costs on Yamal owing to low mean average yearly temperature.

“Yamal LNG will be competitive at all markets,” Leonid Mikhelson believes.

Yamal LNG project envisages the construction of an LNG plant with annual capacity of 16.5 million tonnes per annum based on the feedstock resources of the South-Tambeyskoye field. According to the PRMS reserve standards, the proven and probable reserves of the South-Tambeyskoye field as of 31 December 2012 were appraised at 907 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The Project also requires the construction of transport infrastructure including a sea-port and an airport located at Sabetta (north-east of the Yamal Peninsula).
