The 4th International Forum "The Arctic: Present and Future" under the auspices of the Interregional NGO Association of Polar Explorers opened in St. Petersburg on December 10, 2014. According to the event organizing committee, the Forum has brought together more than 600 participants.
Among the participants are representatives of Russian authorities, businesses and public organizations. The forum business program includes an exhibition to display the social, economic and technological development of the Arctic zone.
The plenary session on public policies aimed at sustainable development of the Arctic zone, was kicked off by the opening speech of President of the NGO APE, Special Representative of the President Russian Federation for International Cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic Artur Chilingarov.
Chilingarov told the session participants that the Association should increase the effectiveness of its work, first of all, promoting the idea that Russia's future development s inextricably linked with the development its Arctic zone in public opinion, in the political, industrial and business circles.
The main outcome of the Forum which will last until December 11, will be the resolution with suggestions and recommendations to be forwarded to the authorities of the Russian Federation for the improvement of legislation and government regulation in the field of sustainable development in the Arctic.
