Throughput of port Riga (Latvia) up 15.8% to 41.08 mln t in 2014

In January-December 2014 the Freeport of Riga (Latvia) handled 41,080,400 t of cargo (+15.8%, year-on-year).  As IAA PortNews was informed by the port authority, coal transshipment climbed by 6.4% to 14,093,500 t, oil products – by 42.6% to 10,204,000 t, wood pellets – dropped by 42% to 520,400 t, scrap metal – up 7.7% to 1,177,200 t, ore – down 17.5% to 366,000 t. 

The port’s container throughput increased by 1.7% to 387,603 TEUs. Passenger turnover fell by 11.9% to 737,865 persons including 60,840 cruise passengers (-9.2%).

Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2013, the port’s throughput declined by 1.6%, year-on-year, to 35,466,700 t of cargo.
