Throughput of port Liepaja (Latvia) up 9.5% to 5.29 mln t

In January-December 2014, the port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 5.29 mln t of cargo (+9.5%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews was informed by the port authority. Transshipment of grain climbed by 43.5% to 2.75 mln t, construction materials – by13.6% to 511,000 t, timber – fell by 12.3% to 455,800 t, oil – down 7.4% to 134,100 t, oil products – down 7.1% to 162,600 t.

The port’s container throughput dropped by 20% to 3,610 TEUs. Transshipment of ro-ro cargo cargo increased by 17% to 36,260 units. Passenger turnover declined by 1% to 42,305 persons. The number of calls climbed by 5% to 1,368 calls.

The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries, mainly Belarus. In 2013, the port of Liepaja handled 4.84 mln tonnes of cargo.
