A pier for long-distance lines has been opened at the port of Murmansk, IAA PortNews journalist reports. The reconstruction of the pier commenced in 2012. The work implied the extension of the pier dimensions, dredging and bank protection operations within the passenger district. The length of the pier was increased from 147 to 206.6 m, width – from 13.96 to 19.6 m.

The reconstruction of the long-distance lines pier in the port of Murmansk along with the reconstruction of the passenger terminal and opening of the offshore post to cross the RF border has been undertaken under the Arctic Harbour project aimed at cruise tourism development in the Murmansk Region. According to FSUE Rosmorport, implementation of the project will let Murmansk boost the number of foreign cruise ships’ calls from 6 to 70 and service annually up to 70,000 passengers in the future. Besides, it will contribute to improvement of services at local passenger lines.

“I am sure, the opening of the new pier will allow for accepting vessels of other dimensions and quality. Murmansk will become even more attractive for those wishing to see the Northern frontiers of Russia,” said Victor Olersky, Deputy Transport Minister of Russia.

“Marine façade of Murmansk should be beautiful. We hope to implement all our plans in time despite the difficult economic situation in the country. There is a Presidential Decree, Government support, allocated funds. I think that in the current situation the development of Murmansk Transportation Hub is a priority. The project on reconstruction of the passenger terminal is undergoing an expert review, then the work starts and we are going to see the results in September 2016,” said Aleksandr Davydenko, head of the Federal Marine and River Transport Agency.
