Yuzhny port's two-month cargo volume rises 11.6% to 7,74 million tonnes

Odessa region based Port Yuzhny in January-February 2015 handled 7.74 million tonnes of different cargoes, which represents an increase of 11 6% on the same period last year, the Cetre for Transport Strategies (CTS) said, citing statistics from the Authority of Ukraine Seaports.

There was a 7.2% decline in Liquid bulk segment, to 749 million tonnes. Shipments of chemicals dropped by 22.8% to 421,000 tonnes, while vegetable oil volume jumped 2.2 times to 211,000 tonnes. Handling of oil products fell by 28.7% to 117,000. tonnes.

Dry bulk segment demonstrated a 17.1% growth to nearly 6.9 million tonnes. Coal volume was up 3.2 times from last year's figures to 1.02 million tonnes. Handling of ore reached 4.013 million tonnes (+ 14.2%). The volume of handled fertilizers shrank by 32.3% to 279,000 tonnes, grain exports fell by 4.4% to 1.419 million tonnes.

There was also a 59.3% drop in break bulk segment (99,000 tonnes). The port handled 12,000 tonnes of iron (-82.6%), 87,000 tonnes of containers (-12.9%). In units container trade totaled 4,806 units (-0.2%) or 8,167 TEUs (-3.8%)

Port of Yuzhny founded in 1978 is located on the northwest coast of the Black Sea, in the ice Small Adzhalyk (Grigorievsky) estuary, 30 km north-east of Odessa. The Port is accessible from sea through a 3km-long 14-m-deep canal, so pilotage service is required for inbound and outbound vessels. The main port stevedore is a state-owned enterprise Yuzhny Merchant Sea Port.
