Six-month cargo volumes of Lithuanian port of Klaipeda rises 6.2% to 18.85 million tonnes

Freight throughput at the Port of Klaipeda, Lithuania, in January-June 2015 increased by 6.2% compared with H1 2014 to 18.85 million tonnes, the Port Authority said.

The freight traffic growth was attributed to a 40-percent spike in liquid bulk volumes, to 5.2 million tonnes. General cargo traffic decreased by 1.4% to 5.62 million tonnes, handling of loose bulk and dry bulk cargoes shrank by 4% to 8.03 million tonnes.

In June, monthly throughput of Klaipėda port reached 3.29 million tonnes, up 13.9%, or 402,400 tonnes more than in June 2014.

State-run Port of Klaipeda, the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, is the largest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea and inland traffic lanes. There are 17 stevedore companies, shipyards and other operators at the port, providing a broad range of services. In 2013, total throughput of Port of Klaipeda and Butingės terminal was 33,41 million tonnes.
