Today DB Schenker BTT GmbH will be launching its new rail connection between KombiTerminal Burghausen (KTB) and the port of Rotterdam via the CTS facilities at Cologne-Niehl Container Terminal. Burghausen is located in Bavaria – a stone’s throw from the Austrian border – in the region referred to as the ‘Bavarian chemical triangle’, the Port of Rotterdam Authority said on Wednesday.
The new rail connection enables freight forwarders, logistics companies and shipping companies to quickly and reliably connect the local industry of the Bavarian chemical triangle with the Rhine-Ruhr region and the port of Rotterdam. This creates a new central hub that offers swift intermodal transport and web-based container planning at the European and global level.
“Thanks to the shuttle connection with the port of Rotterdam, we can offer our clients an excellent alternative that allows them to maintain a quick, reliable and efficient connection with global import and export flows,” emphasises Carsten Hinne, Senior Vice President European Industry Sector Chemicals, Oil and Fertilizer at DB Schenker Rail AG and CEO of DB Schenker BTT GmbH. DB Schenker BTT, one of the units of the major European rail operator DB Schenker Rail, is active in the transport of chemical products.
“The new rail connection that we have realised with our partners fits in perfectly with our concept outlining the further expansion of intermodal rail connections,” adds Wouter van Dijk, Director Logistics at the Port of Rotterdam Authority. “Thanks to our infrastructure and extensive possibilities, Rotterdam is actually a more logical choice of port for German and Austrian freight forwarders and shipping companies than Hamburg.”
