United Arab Shipping takes delivery of the world’s greenest ultra-large container ships

United Arab Shipping Co. has taken delivery of the world’s greenest ultra-large container ships. This achievement was celebrated in Zeebrugge, during the maiden call of “mv Al Muraykh’. The ship was handled at APM Terminals Zeebrugge.

The 18,800 20-foot-equivalent-unit capacity ship “mv Al Muraykh” is first sister vessel of the “mv Barzan”, which arrived in the port of Zeebrugge earlier this year. These vessels are the largest ships in UASC’s fleet and the greenest container carriers in the world. The carbon dioxide emissions output per TEU is more than 60 percent below that of 13,500 TEU vessels delivered just three years ago. They are the first ships to receive classification society DNV GL’s notation certifying compliance with its latest gas-fueled rules.

“mv Al Muraykh” and “mv Barzan” are the first of a series of six 18,800 TEU vessels that will set new standards for fuel and energy efficiency related to optimized design and advanced propulsion and equipment efficiency technologies. Both ships moored at the quay of the APM terminal in Zeebrugge. The final ship of the series, Thiama, is expected in early February 2016.

United Arab Shipping Company stated at the naming ceremony of the first vessel “mv Barzan” that “the delivery of our first 18,800 TEU vessel, Barzan, demonstrates our commitment to technical innovation and eco-effectiveness. We are expanding our fleet by building larger, greener vessels, which support our global ambitions to fulfill and exceed our customers’ requirements.”
