Norilsk Nickel invests RUB 1.5 bln into modernization of its mooring facilities in Murmansk

Norilsk Nickel has commenced reconstructing mooring facilities of its Murmansk Transport Division. Total investment of Norilsk Nickel into the project on reconstruction of the second berth (over 300 meters in length) is estimated at RUB 1.5 bln. According to the Company, reconstruction of additional mooring facilities and dredging will let almost double the cargo flow – from 700,000 t to 1.5 mln t per year.

As of today, Murmansk Transport Division can handle vessels at one own berth. The new berth will we able to accept vessels with the draught of up to 11.2 m. MTD terminal will be capable of handling two or three vessels simultaneously, depending on their size and capacity. The project implementation will also let generate new jobs.

The facility is to be put into operation in QIV’2016.

Murmansk Transport Division handles mostly Norilsk Nickel products.

Packaged nickel and copper are delivered to Murmansk by sea from Dudinka, from the Polar Division of the Company, as well as by rail and by road from Monchegorsk, from the Kola MMC

When Nickel Plant is closed in Norilsk in 2016, all nis material produced by Polar Division of Norilsk Nickel will be processed in Monchegorsk (Kola MMC) which means considerable increase of cargo flow via Murmansk Transport Division by Dudinka-Murmansk route, hence more vessels handled at the transshipment terminal.

Murmansk Transport Division also handles other companies’ products. The fleet of Norilsk Nickel operating within Murmansk Transport Division numbers five state-of-the-art Arctic class container carriers, a tanker and a port icebreaker.
