Qatargas initiates new environmental project for Laffan Refinery in support of QNV 2030

Qatargas Operating Company Limited (Qatargas) has awarded a contract to Qatar Kentz for the engineering, procurement, supply, construction, and commissioning of a Water Recycling Facility at Laffan Refinery 2 located in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar.

This facility is designed to handle the Treated Industrial Water from Laffan Refinery 1, currently in operation, and Laffan Refinery 2, which is under construction. The Water Recycling Facility aims at reducing the water consumption of these two plants and at eliminating the discharge of Treated Industrial Water. The recycled water is planned to be re-used in the Laffan Refineries 1 and 2 as boiler feed water and cooling water.

This project is a further evidence of Qatargas’ commitment to meet the highest quality and environmental standards and its continued efforts to contribute to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030 objectives to protect the environment and promote a sustainable development for future generations to come. Furthermore, this facility complies with the Qatar Ministry of Environment’s Directive to reuse the Treated Industrial Water produced from industrial plants.

The Water Recycling Facility will be installed inside the Laffan Refinery 2 and it is scheduled to be operational at the end of 2016.

Laffan Refinery 2 is the expansion project of Laffan Refinery 1 and it is a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum, Total, Idemitsu, Cosmo, Marubeni and Mitsui. When completed, the Laffan Refinery 2, also operated by Qatargas, will process an additional 146 thousand barrels per day of condensate recovered from the North Field, doubling the capacity of Laffan Refinery 1.

Over the years, Qatargas has successfully delivered a series of world class projects upholding its commitment to technical and operational excellence while maintaining the highest environmental standards.
