The scope of dredging at Volga-Caspian Seaway Canal is to make 5.8 mln cbm in 2016, Astrakhan Region Governor Aleksandr Zhilkin was told during his meeting to the Administration of Caspian Sea Ports.
According to the press center of the regional government, eight high performance dredgers will be involved in the works on dredging at the most challenging sections of the Canal. The works are to begin in early April upon completion of winter navigation period.
Aleksandr Zhilkin says financing issues related to the dredging operations aimed at expansion of the Canal throughput capacity have been solved at the federal level.
“The sanctions against Iran have been lifted and we expect the trade activities with our Caspian neighbor intensify this year,” said Zhilkin. He added that it is also important to solve the problem of transporting oversized units built by Astrakhan shipyards to the offshore oil fields being developed by Lukoil.
Volga-Caspian Seaway Canal is 188 km long. The dredging project covering the period till 2018 has obtained the state expert environmental approval.
