USCG responds to a 22-barge breakaway on the Mississippi River

The U.S. Coast Guard continues its response to a 22-barge breakaway at mile marker 54 on the Mississippi River, near West Point a la Hache, Wednesday, the USCG said in a press release.

As a result of the breakaway, three deep-draft motor vessels transiting the river sustained damage after colliding with a few of the barges. A portion of dry-bulk soy beans from one of the vessels entered the river and the release has since been secured. The three affected deep-draft vessels are safely anchored.

All 22 barges were loaded with coal and petroleum coke, a coal like substance.

The Mississippi River is closed between mile markers 51 to 54.

The Coast Guard continues to work with the responsible party to ensure all barges are accounted for.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
