EUROGATE increases container volumes at its German terminals by 1.5 per cent to 8.2 million TEUs in 2015

The EUROGATE Group increased container handling volumes at its German terminals in 2015 by 1.5 per cent to 8.2 million TEUs. The North Sea terminals in Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven recorded an increase in container handling volumes of 1.9 per cent overall. In Bremerhaven, feeder volumes in transport operations with Russia decreased, resulting in a handling volume at the terminal of 5.5 million TEUs, 4.3 per cent lower than in 2014.

Container volumes handled at EUROGATE Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven, in operation since 2012, grew sixfold on the other hand, to a most gratifying 426,751 TEUs. After a strong start, EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg was overtaken by the faltering Chinese export trade and stagnated at 2.3 million TEUs (+0.5 per cent year-on-year). Overall container handling volumes for the Europe-wide EUROGATE Group came to 14.6 million TEUs.

Emanuel Schiffer, Chairman of the EUROGATE Group Management Board: “EUROGATE handled over 200 container vessels >18,000 TEUs at its North Sea terminals in 2015. Our container terminals are predestined to handle the new megacarriers, something our customers have in the meantime recognised as well. This has enabled us to stand our ground against the market trend. The market environment continues to be challenging and is characterised by overcapacities and weakening global demand, triggered by the slump in Chinese Export trade. For 2016, we are again anticipating a difficult year. Against this background, we are focusing all our efforts on providing our customers with the service they expect. “We can do mega container ships” – EUROGATE has demonstrated this time and again.”
