State trials of the Admiral Essen frigate, second ship of Project 11356 built for RF Navy by Baltic Shipbuilding Plant “Yantar” (USC), commenced in on January 30, 2016, says the shipyard’s press center.

The decision to start the state trials has been made by the head of the State Acceptance Committee working onboard the Admiral Essen.

The shipyard’s trial team and the crew are currently engaged in preparing the maiden trial scheduled for this week. State trials will last for about a month at the sea range of Russia’s Baltic Fleet. The delivery to RF Navy is scheduled for April 2016.

The Admiral Essen was laid down on July 8, 2011 and launched on November 7, 2014. Under two contracts signed with the Russian Ministry of Defense, Yantar Shipyard is to build a series of six frigates of Project 11356 developed by the Northern Design Bureau. All frigates of the series will join the Black Sea Fleet of RF Navy.

Ships of project 11356 have a displacement of 4,000 t, speed - 30 knots, endurance - 30 days, crew - 200. The frigate is equipped with Onyx or Kalibr anti-ship missiles, 100-mm gun, air defense system Kortik, 533-mm torpedoes and Ка-31 helicopter.

Kaliningrad-based Baltic Shipbuilding Plant “Yantar” (Yantar Shipyard) was founded on July 8,1945 on the basis of a Koenigsberg unit of German’s Schichau Werft. Yantar Shipyard specializes in building and repair of warships and civil boats. Throughout the years the Shipyard has built 160 warships and more than 500 merchant vessels. The Russian Government holds majority stake in the shipbuilding firm through Western Center of Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation.

United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC OJSC) is the largest shipbuilding company in Russia. It was set up in 2007 with 100% federal ownership. The holding comprises 60 companies and organizations (major shipbuilding and shiprepairing companies as well as leading design bureaus). Currently, USC consolidates about 80% of the domestic shipbuilding complex. The Russian market is the main focus of the state corporation though it also exports its products to 20 countries worldwide.
