Port of Helsinki testing floating rubbish bins
Wärtsilä is donating two prototype Seabin floating rubbish bins to the City of Helsinki and Port of Helsinki as part of Seabin's three-month long global pilot programme, planned to launch in April 2017, in which Helsinki will serve as one the installation locations for the floating rubbish bins. The City of Helsinki and Port of Helsinki will be taking care of the daily emptying of the Seabins, which will be installed in the city's harbour areas, the company said in its press release.
The Seabin is a floating rubbish bin that is placed in the water at marinas, docks, yacht clubs and commercial ports, collecting all floating rubbish. Water is sucked in from the surface and passes through the catch bag filter inside the Seabin. The water is then pumped back into the marina, leaving litter and debris trapped in the catch bag, to be disposed of properly.
During the three-month test period, user experiences and data will be gathered from the pilot partners before commercial sales of the Seabins commence. Once they do, four additional Seabins can be installed in Helsinki.
The three-year partnership with startup company Seabin is part of Wärtsilä Corporation's Finland 100 centennial programme. With the programme Wärtsilä aims to support the City of Helsinki and the Port of Helsinki's efforts to clean up the marine environment.
