Dmitry Medvedev orders to commission Nizhny Novgorod hydroengineering complex by 2021

Nizhny Novgorod low-head hydraulic engineering complex should enter service by 2021, Russian Prime Minister Minister Dmitry Medvedev said in Volgograd during a meeting on the preservation, prevention of pollution and rational use of the Volga River.

"It should be put into operation by 2021, after which restrictions on cargo and passenger traffic in this shallow stretch of the river will be lifted. And the through navigation on the Volga as an inland waterway of international importance will be preserved, which is extremely important, " Russian Government official website quoted Mr. Medvedev as saying.

The Russian Prime Minister said the money for the project had been included in the draft budget. The total amount of financing for Nizhny Novgorod hydroengineering complex is about RUB 43.5 billion.

By the order of the Russian Government dated August 4, 2017 (No. 1678-r), the area planning scheme has been amended to implement the project for the construction of the Nizhny Novgorod hydro engineering complex, the Russian Government press office said the main characteristics of the hydrosystem have been updated and its future location specified.
