Khersones sailing ship takes part in celebrations marking Yalta City Day
The events devoted to the celebrations marking City Day were held in Yalta on August 12, 2017. Rosmorport says the Khersones sailing ship intentionally arrived in the city to congratulate the pearl of the Crimean resorts on the anniversary. The ship has become a real decoration of the holiday throughout all weekend.
In honor of City Day an open board was organized on the Khersones ship and excursions were conducted for those who wish. The crew of the ship introduced thousands of guests to the sailing ship's construction and the style of life on one of the most beautiful vessels.
During the program, the ship was attended by chairman of the Yalta City Council Roman Derkach, Acting Yalta Administration Head Yelena Sotnikova and Captain of the Seaport of Yalta Boris Furman. The Khersones sailing ship Captain, Dmitry Teslenko, conducted a tour aboard the vessel. The honorable guests learned about the history of the sailing ship, visited the command bridge, took a look at the pilothouse, cabins of the captain and sailors. Teslenko said, “In these latter days the Khersones often calls at the Yalta seaport and the fact that the vessels is now in Yalta on City Day is a big honor for me and my crew”.
Cadets of the Yalta city children naval center became special guest of the sailing ship. The institution of extended education defends the prestige of maritime professions by restoring interest in specialties: drilling, practical water exercises, the participation in city and regional competitions and fascinating walking tours.
The Khersones Sailing Ship Cup regatta for children and young people has been organized for pupils of the center. The sailing ship's captain gave prizes and souvenirs to winners of the competitions. Teslenko expressed the hope that child's devotion to sea and sailing ships will turn into the future profession.
Young cadets undergoing training on the ship welcomed the guests of the resort by a solemn parade. Self-made centerboard boats were presented on the coast and the tug war competitions also took place. Cadets of the Kronshtadt Sea Cadet Corps study the art of sailing on the ship. They succeeded in congratulating the city on the anniversary. Children have boarded the vessel not long ago – on August 9 and this is their first voyage under the sails.
The documentary of Russian cinema director and traveler Leonid Kruglov was shown in the evening especially for all guests. The film described travels of famous mariners. The film is based on the Sedov barge round-the-world cruise that repeats the route of the legendary expedition made by Ivan Krusenshtern and Yuri Lisyansky in 1803-1806.
The City Day program also included traditional carnival processions, exhibitions and fairs, festivals and musical performances. This year City Day in Yalta has coincided with Recreational Athlete Day. Special attention was paid to sportive events. The solemn celebrations culminated in grandiose fireworks.
