WMU: prominent speakers kickoff specialization terms
On 19 January, WMU students had the opportunity to engage with senior officials from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Commission (EC) who guest lectured during the first week of specialization studies for the Class of 2018, WMU says in a press release.
The IMO Member State Obligations course for students in the Maritime Safety and Environmental Administration (MSEA) specialization provides a broad overview and appreciation of the role of government in policy formulation and the administration of maritime affairs. Mr. Lawrence Barchue, Assistant Secretary General and Director for the Department for Member State Audit and Implementation Support at IMO, introduced the IMO Auditing Scheme to the students. Mr. Barchue is a 1992 graduate of WMU and has lectured at the University for many years to build up the foundations of the IMO Auditing Scheme. Mr. Jacob Terling from the Unit of Maritime Safety in the Directorate General MOVE of the European Commission was also a guest lecturer for the course and provided an overview of the tasks of the European Commission in the area of maritime safety.
Mr. Frederick Kenney, Director of Legal Affairs and External Relations at the IMO returned to WMU as a Guest Lecturer for the course entitled Introduction to Roles and Obligations of Maritime Administrations. He was joined by guest lecturer, HE Mr. Holger Martinsen, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Argentina to the IMO, and WMU Professor Emeritus, PK Mukherjee. The course included students in both the Maritime Law & Policy (MLP) and Maritime Education & Training (MET) specializations. It provides a broad overview and appreciation of the role of government and maritime administrations in policy formulation regarding maritime affairs.
The Malmö MSc in Maritime Affairs is a 14-month programme with seven specializations: Maritime Education & Training; Maritime Energy Management; Maritime Law & Policy; Maritime Safety & Environmental Administration; Ocean Sustainability, Governance and Management; Port Management, and Shipping Management & Logistics. Foundation studies are taught in the first term and cover the introductory knowledge that is fundamental to all activities in the maritime field. Three successive terms focus on specialization studies and a dissertation. WMU has more than 150 Visiting Professors and Guest Lecturers from around the world who contribute their expertise to enrich the education of WMU students.
