The Russian Government will submit proposals to include in the comprehensive plan for modernization and development of the main infrastructure of measures to expand the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) and the Trans-Siberian Railway (Transsib) until September 10, 2018. The corresponding instruction was given to the Cabinet of Ministers by the President of Russia, the Ministry of Regional Development said.
Alexander Kozlov, Russian Minister for the Far East Development comments: “It is impossible to talk about any qualitative economic development of the Far East withou0t transport infrastructure, without the support of the infrastructure of the Baikal-Amur Mainline and the Trans-Siberian Railway. Modernization of the main transport arteries is necessary. We see understanding and full support on the issue from the country’s top leadership”.
The Ministry of Regional Development of Russia says that from 2013 through 2019, the government implements fist phase of the program of modernization of the railway infrastructure of the Baikal-Amur and Trans-Siberian mainlines. The Phase 1 project works are valued roughly at RUB 562.4 billion. The scope of work includes the transportation capacity increase to 66.8 million tonnes of cargo per year by 2020 on the 2012 figures. Annual exports from the main mineral deposits in 2012 amounted to 58.1 million tonnes. At the end of the first phase of the Baikal-Amur Mainline and Transsib rehabilitation programme in 2020, the export volume will grow by 66.8 million tonnes on the 2012 level to 124.9 million tonnes.
