Cargo traffic in Volga Basin of Russia’s IWW in navigation season 2018 fell by 14.6% Y-o-Y to 36.662 million tonnes

Cargo traffic in the Volga Basin of Russia’s inland water ways in the navigation season of 2018 (ended on December 8) fell by 14.6%, year-on-year, to 36.662 million tonnes, says press center of Rosmorrechflot (Federal Marine and River Transport Agency).

Transportation of construction cargo exceeded 20 million tonnes, liquid bulk cargo – more than 9 million tonnes, grain – about 2 million tonnes, metal – over 1 million tonnes, sulfur – 888,000 tonnes. 

Transportation of grain surged by 40%, timber – by 13.5%. The decrease was seen in transportation of liquid bulk cargo, metal, construction and other cargoes.

Transportation of passengers was almost flat, year-on-year, at 1,015,651 passengers though the number of passenger ships operating in the basin was reduced by almost 20%.  

The length of inland water ways run Volga Basin Administration totals 9,231.3 km. In the reported period, 3,997.6 of waterways were open for navigation including 3,189.6 km of waterways with guaranteed dimentions.

Dredging works within the basin involved 13 dredgers and one floating crane. The scope of dredging – 6.5 million cbm.
