Congress to address research planning and practice through the example of large-scale NOVATEK projects
Large-scale projects on production and transportation of liquefied natural gas being implemented by NOVATEK over the recent decade provide an extensive practical knowledge that can serve as basics for improvement of scientific approaches, planning and implementation of R&D in the field of Arctic development, designing and construction of hydraulic engineering structure in polar ports as well as shipbuilding and navigation in challenging ice conditions. Aleksandr Smelik, Head of HES Maintenance Service, Arctic LNG 2 LLC, is expected to cover this topic at the 2nd Congress “Hydraulic Engineering Structures and Dredging” which will be held on 20-21 February 2019.
The author will share his opinion on expanding practical application of scientific approaches to justification of design solutions for construction of hydraulic engineering structure in ports and for improvement of regulatory framework covering its maintenance.
The seaway canal in the northern part of the Gulf of Ob will serve as an example. According to Aleksandr Smelik, the canal had been designed as a straight line basing on old geological and geomorphological data and on a misconception of ice sheet static character throughout the winter period. Several years of operation and accumulation of new data about ice conditions have made it clear that ice in this part of the Gulf of Ob is subject to drifting. Therefore, it would be more efficient and safe to have a canal with a different configuration.
Aleksandr Smelik also has a positive example of applying a scientific approach. In 2008, FSUE Rosmorport introduced a specific indicator “average cost of 1 cbm of dredging”. According to the report author, this has lead to gradual reduction of repair dredging cost and to a research resulting in introduction of state norms for dredging works as well as to justification and construction of the company’s own dredgers.
The 2nd Congress “Hydraulic Engineering Structures and Dredging” is organized by Media Group PortNews in partnership with FSUE Rosmorport.
