Glavgosexpertiza (Russia’s Main Department of State Expertise) says it has completed the audit of a cost estimate for the fourth phase of reconstruction works on Volgo-Don Shipping Canal named after V.I Lenin and issued its positive opinion.
VDSC is a canal which connects the Volga River and the Don River at their closest points. VDSC is fed by the waters of the Tsimlyansky Reservoir with the use of three pumping stations of 45 cbm/sec each. Water is also taken from the canal and used for irrigation. VCSC numbers 96 hydraulic engineering structures including 17 locks, 18 navigable channels, three pumping stations, 23 earth dams and two bulkhead gates.
The Canal is annually passed by more than 7,000 vessels of up to 6,000 tonnes in capacity. Annual cargo throughput exceeds 12 million tonnes.
The project under consideration foresees the reconstruction of the pumping station No 33.
The works will be financed by the federal budget.
