Jason Goodhand joins DNV GL as business lead for energy storage

DNV GL, the world’s largest resource of independent energy experts and certification body, recently announced the appointment of Jason Goodhand to the role of Global Business Lead for Energy Storage.

Grid-connected energy storage plays a critical role in the transition to a cleaner, greener energy supply, allowing energy systems with high proportions of variable renewable energy sources such as wind and solar to meet demand reliably at all times. According to DNV GL’s Energy Transition Outlook report, solar PV, onshore wind, hydropower and offshore wind will account for 80 percent of global electricity production in the future. The report further predicts that the installed battery capacity is forecast to grow to around 50 TWh in that same timeframe, specifically to manage the variability of power generated from renewable sources.

“DNV GL regards storage as a key component to achieving the energy transition while maintaining reliable electricity supply, especially as renewable generation sources make up a larger percentage of the generation mix,” said Ditlev Engel, CEO of DNV GL Energy. “Jason’s experience leading both start ups and global companies in the clean technology sector is ideally suited to ensure that our energy storage solutions respond to market needs with the agility that this rapidly evolving sector requires.”

Mr Goodhand commented, “I have long sought opportunities related to innovative energy technologies. With energy storage’s critical role in the shift to renewables, this move was the logical next step for me. Through dedicated labs and expertise around the world, DNV GL has created an industry-leading combination of analytical and testing experience that gives it a unique advantage in finding energy storage solutions. I look forward to developing and strengthening DNV GL’s position in this key sector of the energy market.”

With over 15 years of experience in the cleantech energy sector, Jason has developed and managed businesses and projects involving grid-scale renewable energy, hydrogen fuel cells, and energy storage in Canada and the USA. Jason comes to DNV GL after 10 years with international energy giant ENGIE in various roles and locations, most recently its North American Storage group. Jason holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Richard Ivey School of Business and a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Western Ontario.

As Global Business Lead for Energy Storage, Jason will focus on key markets and customers to grow DNV GL’s energy storage business by doubling its number of energy storage experts to support this fast-growing area. He will also drive the expansion of the company’s digital energy storage services, building and leading a global team of energy storage experts, and working in close collaboration DNV GL’s energy experts around the globe.

DNV GL provides support across the entire energy storage value chain: feasibility, testing, development and engineering, construction, and operation. Its energy storage experts work with manufacturers, utilities, project developers, communities and regulators to identify, evaluate, test and certify systems that will integrate seamlessly with today’s grid, while planning for tomorrow.
