CNIIMF forecasts NSR cargo traffic to reach 100 million tonnes by 2035

Specialists of Central Marine Research and Design Institute (CNIIMF) says that, according to the baseline scenario, cargo traffic on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) will reach 36.3 million tonnes by 2020 including 30.4 million tonnes of outflow, 5.4 million tonnes of inflow and 0.5 million tonnes of transit cargo.

According to the press center of CNIIMF, by 2025, NSR traffic will total 70.1 million tonnes including 64.2 million tonnes of outflow, 4.9 million tonnes of inflow and 1 million tonnes of transit cargo; by 2030 - 88 million tonnes including 83.3 million tonnes of outflow, 3.2 million tonnes of inflow and 1.5 million tonnes of transit cargo.

The bulk of forecast cargo to be transported by the Northern Sea Route is to be ensured by Arctic resource projects of large Russian companies involved in production and export of hydrocarbons.

Inflow is to be ensured by supplies under Arctic fields development and under ‘Northern Delivery’ programme.

CNIIMF expects a 25-pct growth of transit on the Northern Sea Route versus 2012.

Central Marine Research and Design Institute (CNIIMF) was established in 1929. It is Russia’s leading scientific organisation in the area of maritime transport.
