In the first half of 2019, Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg JSC (SP SPb, a company of UCL Holding) handled 3.5 million tonnes of cargo, down 7% versus the same period of the previous year, the company says in a press release.
The decrease should be attributed to a 26-pct fall of ferrous metal handling to 1.5 million tonnes metal transshipment amid the reduction of export shipments from Russian iron and steel plants. Meanwhile transshipment of non-ferrous metal grew by 20% to 705,000 tonnes while handling of metal scrap remained flat, year-on-year, at over 430,000 tonnes.
SP SPb demonstrated a positive dynamics in the segment of big-bags. Due to a newly created infrastructure for their storage and transshipment the port’s clients got an opportunity to boost supplies of mineral fertilizers in big-bags by 38% to 255,000 tonnes, pellets – by 66% to 207,000 tonnes.
In general, transshipment of general cargo totaled 3.15 million tonnes (-8%), dry bulk cargo – 195,000 tonnes (-4%).
SP SPb increased its container throughput by 4% to 16,200 TEUs. The company launched its container service in autumn 2016. I lets accept 45, 40 and 20-foot multipurpose, refrigerated and tank containers. Apart from container handling the company offers additional services: stuffing/stripping, repacking of container cargoes, acceptance, handling and forming of container trains, pre-voyage preparation of containers as well as temporary storing of containers at the port.
In the reporting period, the share of exports grew to 98.6% of the total throughput and totaled 3.5 million tonnes (-5%), imports decreased to 1.4% making 50,000 tonnes (-65%).
