ICS Chairman forecasts LNG to be the most significant fuel for international shipping in coming 15-20 years

LNG will be the most significant and, perhaps, the most popular fuel for the international shipping in the coming 15-20 years, Esben Poulsson, Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), said in his interview with the Russian Shipping portal (PortNews Media Group).

“Obviously, liquefied natural gas will be the most widespread fuel. However, the bunkering market will develop differently in the long term, - said ICS Chairman. - We already see the appearance of new technologies and witness the development of alternative fuels”, he added.

When speaking about the period up to 2050, Esben Poulsson forecasted application of large accumulator batteries, hydrogen and other types of fuel. “Today, it is hard to predict which technology will come to the fore”, he said.

According to the International Chamber of Shipping, the industry is currently on the verge of the fourth propulsion revolution due to involvement of new technologies in shipbuilding and introduction of new types of fuel.
