Collaboration research on Condition Based Maintenance for UE engines

Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has announced its plans to enter into a collaboration research contract on Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), MTI Co., Ltd. and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for improving main engine safety and optimization of maintenance timing/interval.

The collaboration aims to utilize vessel’s operation data and main UE engine’s performance data for aiming the investigation of main engine’s reliability and economy.

Various additional sensors are equipped on an in-service vessel for condition diagnosis of our UE main engine to incorporate existing know-how into it, which will realize increasing diagnosis accuracy and optimizing maintenance program, so called Condition Based Maintenance. The research results shall be shared and utilized with the Classification Society to upgrade vessel inspection based on the CBM.

In addition, J-ENG is studying on digital twin to reproduce main engine’s running condition virtually based on the actual running data together with introducing IoT and AI technology actively to contribute to maritime industries’ innovation.
