Santos Port to expand capacity with new $743mln container terminal

The Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, announced that the auction for STS10, a new container terminal at the Port of Santos (SP), will occur between October and November this year, according to DatamarNews.

Speaking to journalists, the minister stated that the project will be submitted to the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) for review in the coming months.

With an estimated investment of R$ 4.5 billion, the project aims to expand the current container handling capacity at the Port of Santos, which already houses terminals such as Santos Brasil, BTP, DPW, and Ecoporto.

The government-approved model includes the construction of four berths, enabling a 50% increase in container handling capacity. Currently, the Port of Santos handles approximately 6 million TEUs annually. Once the new terminal becomes operational, this capacity will rise to 9 million TEUs.

According to Datamar data, these are the container terminals that ranked the highest in throughput.

In 2024, the National Secretariat of Ports held eight auctions, securing R$ 3.74 billion in investments. Auctioned areas included MAC16 at the Port of Maceió (AL); MCP03 at the Port of Santana (AP); ITG02 in Itaguaí (RJ); REC08, 09, and 10 in Recife (PE); RDJ06 in Rio de Janeiro (RJ); and RIG10 at the Port of Rio Grande (RS). For the final two years of the current administration, the Ministry plans to conduct 37 additional port area auctions. This year, private sector investments in the port sector are expected to total R$ 18 billion, compared to R$ 10.6 billion last year.
