In January-May 2007, the ports of Latvia handled 25.825 million tonnes of cargo (+3.1%, year-on-year), RZD-Partner reports. In the 5-month period the ports of Latvia handled 10.862 million tonnes of loose dry cargo (-1.2%, year-on-year) including 5.805 million tonnes of coal (-14.6%), 2.396 million tonnes of chemical cargo (+40%). Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo totaled 10.714 million tonnes (+6.6%) including 8.654 million tonnes of oil products (-5.8%), while transshipment of oil grew 3.1 times to 1.048 million tonnes. Transshipment of general cargo amounted to 4.248 million tonnes (+6.2%, year-on-year)including 1.979 million tonnes of wood (+2.1%), 905.4 thou tonnes of "roll on/roll off" cargo and 842.4 thou tonnes of containerized cargo (+12.8%). The highest handling was demonstrated by the port of Ventspils - 13.235 million tonnes (+8.1% year-on-year). Then comes the port of Riga - 10.342 million tonnes (-3.1%) and the port of Liepaja - 1.699 million tonnes (-1.4%). Among minor ports of Latvia the highest throughput was that of Skulte - 182.9 thou tonnes (+13.5%, year-on-year), Salacgriva - 181 thou tonnes (+49.1%) and Mersrags - 149.6 thou tonnes (+30%). In 2006, the ports of Latvia handled 59.497 million tonnes of cargo (-0.9%, year-on-year).
