Cargo turnover of Saint Petersburg port down 6.6% in Jan.-Sep.
Cargo turnover of Saint Petersburg decreased in January-September by 6.6% against year-on-year result to 39 928.9 thou tons, Administration of the Sea Port of Saint Petersburg reports. Transportation of oil products amounted over the reported period to 9 673.5 thou tons (-18.7% against January-September 2005), metal - 4 869.9 thou tons (-28.3%), timber - 2 118.8 thou tons (-22%). Transshipment of containers grew by 20.5 % до 11 086.5 thou tons (1 026 520 TEU). Transshipment of refrigerator cargo amounted to 2 575.0 thou tons (+5.2%), chemical cargo - 3 708.3 thou tons (-31.7%), food stuff - 75.2 thou tons (-57.4%). Transshipment of general cargo grew through nine months to 1 468.7 thou tons (+14.1%). Transshipment of coal and ore decreased by 33.6% to 1 631.1 thou tons, grain – to 297.9 thou tons (-8.8%). Renewed transshipment of metal scrap amounted over the reported period to - 2 320.7 thou tons, dry bulk cargo – to 14.3 thou tons. Number of vessels handled in the port of Saint Petersburg amounted through 9 months to 20 122 vessels.
In September 2006 cargo turnover of the port decreased by 9.4% against year-on-year result to 4 926.6 thou tons. Transshipment of oil products amounted in September to 1 186.4 thou tons (-34.3% against September 2005), metal - 469.3 thou tons (-47.3%), timber - 164.9 thou tons (-36.2%). Transshipment of containers grew by 23.4% to 1 358.3 thou tons (131 937 TEU). Transshipment of refrigerator cargo amounted to 302.8 thou tons (+19.5%), chemical cargo - 646.1 thou tons (+0.2%). Transshipment of general cargo amounted in September 2006 to 187.0 thou tons (+31.9%). Transshipment of coal and ore decreased by 9.9% to 312.2 thou tons, transshipment of grain grew by 19.5% to 47.8 thou tons. In September the port handled 238.8 thou tons of (in September 2005 transshipment of metal scrap was not carried out in the port) и 2.8 thou tons of dry bulk cargo (in September 2005 transshipment of dry bulk cargo was not carried out in the port). Number of vessels handled in the port of Saint Petersburg amounted in September to 3 178 vessels.
Port of Saint Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of Saint Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the Neva Bay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting Saint Petersburg from flood (the dam).
