Trucks carrying shipping containers to and from the fourth busiest U.S. port for handling cargo in shipping containers have also been idled amid an investigation into Monday's deadly loading accident and while port workers review safety procedures, port spokeswoman Marilyn Sandifur said.
"Maritime operations have been shut down," the port spokeswoman said. "No ships are being loaded or unloaded."
The port may resume loading and unloading shipping containers on Wednesday morning, said John Showalter, a spokesman for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, which represents dock workers at Pacific Coast ports.
Port worker Reginald Ross died on Monday afternoon when a shipping container slipped and crushed him while it was being loaded onto a ship, Showalter said.
