Jurong Port's Oct throughput up 12%

Jurong Port saw an 11.9 per cent increase in container throughput in October to 66,000 TEUs (20-foot containers) from 59,000 the previous year.
Cause for concern: Unless shipments pick up in the remaining two months, it appears likely that Jurong Port may see another fall in throughput this year
However even with the latest figures, year-to-date throughput was just 631,000 TEUs, 185,000 TEUs short of the full-year figure of 816,000 TEUs for 2006.
Last year's full-year figure was in turn already a 10.5 per cent fall from the 912,000 handled the year before.
Unless shipments pick up significantly in the remaining two months of the year, it appears likely that Jurong Port will see another fall in throughput for 2007. Container terminal giant PSA in contrast had 22.4 million TEUs for the year till October, a 13.1 per cent rise over the 19.8 million TEUs in the corresponding period last year.
Overall container figures for Singapore ports released by the Maritime and Port Authority showed that year to date throughput was 23.1 million TEUs, a 12.7 per cent increase over the 20.5 million TEUs in the same previous period.
PSA has a network of 200 shipping lines calling at its terminals while Jurong Port has just 15 lines and vessel operators as customers.
It is however gaining recognition as one of the best emerging container terminal operators in Asia that can offer more specialised attention to smaller players.
