Russia to impose new grain exports restrictions

Russia is likely to impose new restrictions on grain exports, Russian Agricultural Minister Alexei Gordeyev said during a meeting with representatives of the country's regions that had suffered from the recent drought.
He added that further export restrictions could be introduced in January 2008, RBC reports.
Gordeyev explained that Russia needed to impose such restrictions in order to prevent a rapid increase in grain prices on the domestic market against a backdrop of higher global prices. He also noted that, if Russia's grain exports stood at 12-14m tonnes in 2007-2008 season, the restrictions would be logical.
