Mechel Group begins construction of railway access to the Elginskoye coal field

Mechel Group has begun construction of railway access to the Elginskoye coal field (the Republic of Sakha), according to the group's press release issued on Thursday afternoon. The total length of the railway is around 315 km, 60 km of which was built earlier by the deposit's ex-owner, Russian Railroads Co. The railway project includes around 420 man-made structures, including 194 bridges. The annual haulage capacity of the railway will reach 25 mn tons after all stages of construction are completed. Investments in the project are estimated at USD 900 mn. The railway construction is the first stage in tapping the Elginskoye deposit with annual coal output expected at up to 30 mn tons. The facility is to become operational no later than September 30, 2010.
