Regular inspection of safety systems at the Freeport of Riga

On June 29, Statoil Latvija, in cooperation with Neste organized training for elimination of accident aftereffects by imitating starting of fire at the Neste terminal. Civil protection experts of the Freeport of Riga Authority, representatives of Fire Security Inspectorate and Security Service, as well as representatives of the Maritime Administration, experts of the State Fire-fighting and Rescue Service, physicians of the Disaster Medicine Centre were invited as observers, the Baltic Course reports.

“The training is only one part of the security promotion activities undertaken by the enterprises of the Freeport. After accidents that had occurred at the port terminals, great deal of attention is paid to security issues – instead of the yearly inspections we now carry out four-month inspections of the terminals. We also control and promote installation of state-of-the-art equipment that would alarm possible accidents. Special attention is paid to the liquid cargo terminals,” the BC quoted Aivars Karlsons, Head of Port Inspection Department of the Security Service of Freeport of Riga Authority as saying.

Conclusions drawn after training show: the protocol of notification and warning signals is efficient and is used according to the elaborated strategy; the necessary equipment and protective clothing is in the disposal of the Statoil and Neste terminals, also employees have been trained for provision of first medical aid. The Freeport of Riga Authority considers that in organization process of future trainings wider territories should be covered, and Neste and Statoil terminals should also cooperate with the neighboring terminal Naftinpeks which has its own fire fighting car and a trained team of fire fighters. Similar trainings are planned in nearest future also in other terminals.
