The Russian Admiral Levchenko warship to escort merchant vessels off Somalia

The Admiral Levchenko subchaser of the Russian Northern Fleet will join early this week the EU NAVFOR operations to protect merchant vessels from pirates attacks in the Horn of Africa region, RIA Novosti reports citing a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry.

According to him, the ship has been on the scene and is now replenishing its food and water stock.

The Marshal Shaposhnikov warship that had participated for over two months in the international mission to combat the pirates has returned to Vladivostok, the Russian Pacific Fleet main base.

The anti-pirates operations in the Horn of Africa region have been carried out from December 2008 as part the European Union’s Atlanta mission and launched in 2009 the NATO operation Ocean Shield.

According to the London-based International Maritime Bureau (IMB), the number of pirate attacks in the world in Q1, 2010 decreased by 34% over the same period last year, mainly due to the continuing international operations to protect shipping in the Gulf of Aden.
